Exploring Line Project #1: Simple Flowers
Here's a really simple project for those of you who think you can't draw.
Supplies
- Colored bond paper in three different light colors (printer paper works well)
- Black Sharpie
- Brown kraft paper
- Glue stick
Tools
- Scissors
Instructions
- Choose a piece of colored paper to start drawing on. Using a black Sharpie, make a dot.
- Make another dot a little bit below the first dot. Connect the dots to make a line.
- Starting at the bottom dot, make a curved line that goes up and away from the dot. End the line with another dot.
- Now go back to the bottom dot and make another curved line that curves up and away in the opposite direction. End this line with a dot.
- Make a bunch more of these curving lines, ending in dots. Now you have a flower blossom.
- Cut out the blossom, just cutting around it in a general way.
- Make a bunch of these blossoms in your different paper colors.
- On a sheet of brown kraft paper, arrange your blossoms in the top half of the page. When you have an arrangement you like, glue them down with a glue stick.
- Draw a vertical line from the bottom dot of each blossom, down to the bottom of the page. These are your stems. If a blossom overlaps a stem drawn next to it, just jump over the blossom, and continue the stem down to the bottom of the page.
- Make blades of grass like this: Press down hard with the point of the Sharpie on the bottom of the page, then flick your hand up quickly. Make a bunch of grass blades between the flowers. Also, draw a tight zig-zag line along the bottom of the page to make a baseline.
- You've just drawn a picture of some flowers! Good for you!
Points to Ponder:
Notice how:
- The flowers are made with simple lines and dots.
- The brown kraft paper makes the colors of the colored paper pop.
